Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland invites you to a special event on Sunday, June 11; a lecture entitled "Vatican II and You: Five Hundred Years after 1517" by Father John O'Malley, S.J. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland invites you to a special event on Sunday, June 11; a lecture entitled "Vatican II and You: Five Hundred Years after 1517" by Father John O'Malley, S.J. O'Malley wrote- "The Council of Trent (1545-1563) is generally interpreted as the official repudiation of the Reformation by the Catholic Church. That interpretation is both true and false. In any case, centuries later Pope John XXIII convoked Vatican Council II (1962-1965) as an occasion for the Catholic Church to extend a hand in friendship to the “separated brethren.” For a moment during the council it seemed it was going to facilitate a grand reunion of all the Christian churches. That did not happen. Nonetheless, the council did have an impact on every church and on every Christian, never more important than today. Let’s examine that impact together and see what we come up with." John O’Malley, a Jesuit priest and University Professor at Georgetown University, is a prize-winning author and popular lecturer. He specializes in the church history of Europe. His Trent: What Happened at the Council (Harvard University Press, 2012) and What Happened at Vatican II (Harvard UP, 2008) have been translated into five European languages. Last year in recognition of John O’Malley’s scholarship, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University conferred upon him its Centennial Medal, “the school’s highest honor.”
